Today the Burger Love people are trying to set a world record for the most freshly served burgers in 24 hours. We decided we'd try to help them set the record by going out for a burger for lunch. Now, we knew it was going to be busy in places that are participating in Burger Love, especially since it's the last weekend and the world record attempt. So we picked a restaurant and went.
We were briefly greeted when we walked in the door and told to pick one of three tables. So we chose one and after a few minutes a man came over and handed us menus. Then we waited...and waited but no one came over to us. When the man handed us menus he didn't offer to bring us drinks. So after waiting for at least 10 minutes without a single server coming over to us we got up and left. We ended up going to another non-Burger Love restaurant and having our favourite curry for lunch. It worked out better over all because S was happy to have a normal grilled cheese for lunch (instead of a fancy one) and the curry was excellent, as usual.
It was disappointing that the service at the first restaurant was poor today. C and I have been there before and it's been fine. I just find it hard to excuse poor service when restaurants know what is in store for them when they choose to participate in Burger Love. This particular restaurant has participated in Porktober (the pork version of Burger Love) so they know how busy it can get, especially on the final weekend. Why they didn't have extra servers on hand, I don't know. But they lost out on 2 burger sales today, and if the world record comes up 2 burgers short, well then you can blame it on the fact that C and I weren't able to order burgers today.
I was able to finish my Solar Flare shawl today! I got all the ends woven in this morning and after a good soaking it is now drying on the blocking pads. It seems to be taking a long time to dry. I hope it will be dry by morning so that C can take some good pictures of it. I have to say, I am so glad this MKAL is over! It was fun but honestly, there would have been no way I could have finished it on time if I had to go to work during the day. It was a very time-intensive pattern and many of the people who began it have given up, which ups the odds that I'll be the first prize winner. I'm considering sending feedback to the designer, just suggesting things like lengthening the time between clues or breaking the pattern up into smaller clues. It was overwhelming at times seeing these huge, time-intensive clues. I do absolutely love how the shawl turned out. The dye job by the Unique Sheep was dead on for a solar flare.
Now I'm going to go work on my poor, neglected Outlander shawl and watch some more episodes of DareDevil. If you haven't seen it, go watch. Excellent show! And I'm happy because there will be a second season. Yay!

Doctors, and Water, Eggs, and a Tooth
This morning when I got up, S came to say good morning to me. I looked down at her beautiful blue eyes and realized they were bloodshot and kind of goopy. I asked her if they itched and she said yes. After checking which walk-in clinics were open, I managed to get her an appointment at our regular one. The doctor confirmed what I suspected - pinkeye. She seems to be the only person in our family who gets pinkeye and I'm grateful for that. I don't know if I could deal with J having pinkeye. For the next 7 days I get to put drops in S's eyes twice a day. And spend lots of time washing my hands and reminding both kids to wash theirs. I really don't want this to spread.
Because S is contagious right now, I had to keep her home today. C took J out to spend his gift cards he got for his birthday. His choice? A WWE wrestling game. He's played it over at his friend's house and enjoys it, so he's happy with his choice. After they finished shopping, they went out to lunch at our favourite curry place. I have to say, I was a bit jealous because I was in the mood for curry. But C was a sweetie and asked the server if he could get an order of chicken korma to go. They normally don't do to go orders, but they did for him. It was good, but not as good as when it comes hot and fresh from the restaurant kitchen. It was a nice chance from the past two days of burgers. :-)
The weather today has been kind of crazy. At times it was sunny and then later it started raining. The rain started to melt the snow pretty quickly and sent water into the garage. I emptied the water out of the drainage pit a few times before C got home. He was able to chip out a channel in the ice and direct the flowing water away from the garage and down the driveway. That, combined with the rain stopping, stopped the water from coming into the garage. As long as it doesn't start raining hard again we should be good for the night.
J had his end of the season hockey party today, so C took him to that while I stayed home with Ms. Pinkeye. C said they had these huge inflatable ball things that the kids climbed inside and bounced around in. He said it was chaos but that the kids had a good time. I'm sad we missed it but I knew I couldn't take S there around other kids and put them at risk of getting pinkeye. She and I decided to work on our Easter eggs instead.
S had a plan to paint her eggs rather than just soak them in the dye. I had her draw out her ideas on paper so I had a better idea of what she wanted to do. She ended up making a bunny, a chick, and a tiger (which is my favourite). She also decided to dip another egg in dye. I did two eggs in a gradient of colours, putting our names on one of them. When C and J got home they worked on their eggs. Both of them made a Creeper egg and they both turned out awesome. C also did a rainbow egg and a Homer Simpson egg. J decided to make his own bunny egg and an Ironman egg. I'll get some pictures of them tomorrow to share because they did turn out really cute.
Our house is going to have two special visitors tonight. The Easter bunny will be bringing the kids goodies and the second visitor will be the Tooth Fairy. J had a wiggly tooth and decided that his hockey party would be a good time to pull it out. He likes to try to trick the Tooth Fairy by hiding the envelope but so far she's been good about finding it. Hopefully this time he decides to put it in an easy place to make it easier for her. Hmm...maybe the Easter Bunny and the Tooth Fairy will work together and leave him his tooth money in an egg, hidden around the house. I think it might be a fun thing for her to do.
I hope the wind doesn't stop our visitors tonight. We're suppose to have wind gusts up to 90 km tonight. Oh, and snow. We managed to avoid the snow last night and just get some rain during the day. Tonight and tomorrow we're suppose to have snow. Not as much as they originally said, but still, snow on Easter. Happy Spring!

Get Out of the House Day aka Saturday
Today was a get out of the house kind of day, especially after all the storms we've been having lately. I think everyone was feeling a little cabin fever. We actually started the get out of the house day Friday evening with a hockey game. J's team tied with the older AA team, so we were happy with that. He got some good compliments from his coaches, which made him feel good about the way he played. He's definitely improving his skills this year. It was nice to get back to the rink and see all the parents. We hadn't really seen anyone since getting back from the tournament last weekend because of the storms. It was a late night for the kids but it was fun.
Today started out with getting S out the door to her swimming lesson. She didn't want to go but I made her (yeah, I'm a mean mommy). She hadn't been to her lesson in 3 weeks - the pool canceled what would have been her second lesson and rescheduled it for the end of the session, she didn't want to go the next week because she was 'tired' (we had been up pretty late the night before), and last Saturday we were away for a hockey tournament. So she had forgotten how much fun she actually has when she goes.
We were almost late getting to the pool because of snow removal taking place on the bridge that connects our town to the main city. I think it was actually good we were running late because it didn't give her much time to stand there and cry before hand. She met up with another girl who was in swimming with her last session and they held hands while they walked over to the teacher, mainly because neither one of them could remember who their teacher was. S cried some but the swim instructors at the pool are awesome and they got her calmed down, into her life jacket, and into the pool. She had a great time flipping off the side of the pool and practicing swimming the length of the competition pool. When she got out of the water she had a big smile on her face, as I knew she would. She just needed to remember how much fun swimming actually it.
After we got home from swimming we took a short break then headed down into our little city for lunch. We went to one of our favourite restaurants because they have the best curry I've ever had. (To my friend I used to work with - this place blows away that Indian restaurant we used to go to near the old office). I ordered my usual Chicken Korma while the boys had Butter Chicken. IMO, you can't go wrong with any of the curries they offer. S, not being adventurous, got a tasty grilled cheese.
The owner of the restaurant lives just around the corner from us. One day I may have to break into her house and search for her recipes. We went to this restaurant shortly after we moved here and met the owner a few days later at a neighbourhood party. She brought the Korma sauce and everyone was asking her for the recipe but she wouldn't share it. Meanie. Ah well, it gives us an excuse to go downtown for lunch on Saturdays.
After lunch we strolled down the street to the new location of the hubby's favourite coffee shop. They just moved from what could be considered a side street to a prime location on the main street that runs through the historic part of downtown. I have a feeling the hubby is going to be spending a lot of money there since the new location is directly under his office. The new place is nice but it does lack the historic charm of the old location. And S was sad because there was a carved red fox that hung outside the old building that hasn't come to the new building since it wasn't actually owned by the coffee shop. We split some massive cookies (they were delicious) and the hubby had coffee and I had my usual chai latte.
We came home then, skipping our usual post-lunch trip to the comic book and used book stores because the sidewalks downtown are awful. We've gotten over 5 feet of snow on the island since January 24 and the snow removal crews are having a hard time keeping up. Hopefully tomorrow or next weekend we can get to the book stores downtown. J loves picking up new comics and S loves the book store. And being a reader myself, I find it very hard to say no to buying books.
Now the kids are outside playing with their friends and the hubby went out with them. This is the first time I've had total quiet in the house. I should be working on my story but it's been so long since I've looked at it that I probably won't get back to it until Monday when the kids will be in school. I checked the weather and they WILL be in school or the school board will answer to me.
I think I've hit a plateau in my story writing, kind of like people hit plateaus in dieting. I need to find something new in my story to get me over that hump and continue the story. I think I'll be able to find that on Monday when I will get a good long time without any distractions. Until then I will think about my story, attempt to get the hat I'm knitting done, and enjoy the quiet of the house.
